Amazon Could Be Translating Kindle to Hebrew and Arabic

The e-commerce giant is looking to hire a UX designer for its Kindle division who is fluent and has experience designing for right-to-left reading languages such as Arabic and Hebrew

A new position posted to Amazon’s job board in July suggests that the e-commerce giant is looking to translate its e-reader service Kindle to Arabic and Hebrew.

Amazon is looking to hire a senior UX designer for its Kindle division who has experience designing for or fluency in a right-to-left reading language such as Arabic and Hebrew, according to the job listing. The position, based in Amazon’s Seattle headquarters, is meant “to help Kindle bring the best of our reading experience to new marketplaces worldwide.”

Israeli daily newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth first published the story.

Amazon has been approached for comment but has yet to respond.

Amazon’s Kindle is a family of reading applications for smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers. The Kindle apps are available for download in Israel, but the selection of Hebrew-language books is limited and the app itself is available only in English, German, French, Dutch, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, and Portuguese.

In June, Amazon announced it will begin supporting Arabic language books on Kindle. Amazon reports a selection of more than 12,000 Arabic titles on the Kindle Store.
