AI Diagnostics Startup Viz.ai Aims to Go Beyond Strokes

Viz.ai develops an automated system that analyzes brain scans and alerts stroke specialists by sending the radiological images directly to their smartphone

Stroke detection startup Viz.ai, Inc. is expanding beyond strokes to other areas where quick diagnostic is key, according to co-founder David Golan. The Israeli machine learning specialist spoke Monday at Calcalist’s and Bank Hapoalim’s eighth annual digital and mobile conference INSPIRE Digital@Mobile, held in Tel Aviv.

Viz.ai develops an automated system that can analyze brain scans and alert stroke specialists that a suspected large vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke has been identified, sending the radiological images directly to their smartphone. Viz.ai’s technology was cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in April.

Founded in 2016 and based in San Francisco and Tel Aviv, the company received a total of $28.5 million in investment from GV, the corporate venture capital arm of Alphabet, Inc. and from former Google CEO Eric Schmidt's venture capital firm Innovation Endeavors, among other investors.

“Time is the main component of treating a stroke, and yet it takes a lot of time to treat stroke patients at the hospital, mainly due to the time it takes to process brain scans,” Golan said, adding that Viz.ai’s goal is to use AI technologies to shorten the time it takes to diagnose the condition of patients.
