This week’s winners are:

 

New York-headquartered warehouse robotics startup Fabric for closing a $110 million funding round. Fabric develops robotics technologies that enable urban retailers to offer quick deliveries of food and pharma products. Turning underutilized retail spaces into delivery centers where robots store, sort, and process inventory, the company aims to tackle the last mile distribution challenge, making 1-hour deliveries within a city a viable and affordable option for retailers. WeWork co-founder Adam Neumann for securing himself a cushy exit package. Despite being the face behind one of the biggest business failures of 2019, Neumann will get to keep his billionaire status, as SoftBank agreed to pay him nearly $1.7 billion for his shares, as well as an additional $185 million in counseling fees, and a $500 million credit line. This week’s loser is:

 

Japanese holding company SoftBank betting on Neumann and letting him shatter WeWork’s valuation by 83% in under a year. In addition to Neumann’s fat check, SoftBank also agreed to acquire stock from additional shareholders for over $1 billion, to deliver $5 billion in new financing, and to accelerate an existing commitment for another $1.5 billion in funding. This week’s data point: 60%

 

New data shows that 60% of Israeli students are women, but less than 35% of engineering and computer science students are female. The number of female computer science bachelor students has doubled over the past decade from 2,600 to 5,600 this year. The number of female engineering students grew from 8,600 to 10,400. But when compared to the number of male students, women amount to just 33% and 30% of students in these subjects, respectively. Read more
