Appwrite raises $10 million to take on Google’s Firebase
More than 40,000 developers have already joined the Appwrite community, designed as an open-source alternative backend-as-a-service platform
Appwrite, an open-source ‘Backend-as-a-Service’ (BaaS) platform, has today announced that it has raised $10 million in two successive Seed funding rounds. These rounds were led first by Ibex Investors and Seedcamp, and then were followed by Bessemer Venture Partners and Flybridge Capital Partners. Individual investors include Uri Boness and James Lidenbaum.
“I started Appwrite to scratch my own itch, but it has quickly become something so much bigger than me,” said Eldad Fux, founder and CEO of Appwrite. “Clearly, many developers were having similar challenges with current backend servers for application development, because today we have a team of open source developers building the product and thousands of new community members every day.”
Appwrite is a solution that can help developers adopt a set of easy-to-use and integrated REST APIs to manage their backend needs. According to GitHub, it is one of the fastest-growing open-source projects, and more than 40,000 developers joined the community in the last three months with more than 250 maintainers around the world. Unlike Google’s Firebase, the company’s platform for creating mobile and web applications, Appwrite is a self-hosted solution and so developers can host the service on any production or development infrastructure. Its features include database, storage, functions, geo/localization, console, privacy, and security.

According to reports, the global BaaS market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 68.2% between now and 2017. “The backend-as-a-service category is on fire and is poised for disruption,” said Chip Hazard, general partner at Flybridge Capital Partners. The firm was an investor in Google’s Firebase in 2013 and has invested in Appwrite today. “Because Appwrite is built by open source developers for developers, it empowers anyone to build their apps their way across any platform and in any language. We believe Appwrite has the lead on the next-generation of BaaS companies.”
