Gag order placed on hack of leading dating websites
The National Cyber Directorate said that the leaked information also includes "sensitive" data. This sensitive information encompasses identifying details of users from the websites
A cyber attack has resulted in a significant leak of information from seven well-known dating sites. This announcement was made on Monday evening by the National Cyber Directorate. The case is currently under a publication ban, which prohibits the reporting of the names of the affected sites, as well as the publication or linking to the leaked information.
Currently, most of the investigation's details are restricted from publication. However, according to the Directorate, the leaked information also includes "sensitive" data. This sensitive information encompasses identifying details of users from the websites. This may specifically pertain to users who are married and active on the sites without their spouses' knowledge. It also involves details about other users they have interacted with, potentially revealing their sexual tendencies. Nonetheless, the full extent and nature of the leaked information remain unknown and are being assessed by the website operators.
"In order to preserve the privacy of the users, the Directorate is now working through partners to help reduce the possibilities of public publication of the leaked content," they said in a statement, "in order to preserve the privacy of the users as well as to protect the investigative and defensive activities carried out following the detection of the leak, the Cyber Department of the State Attorney's Office appealed to the court and a publication ban was issued on the leaked content and an order to remove the contents of the leaked content."
According to the statement of the Cyber Directorate, the content leaked from the sites, or at least some of it, has already been published on the Internet, possibly on some social platform. The gag order that was issued is intended to assist the police and the prosecutor's office in removing this content from public platforms.
"The Directorate constantly works with the hosting companies of this type of websites with alerts about attempted attacks and with specific recommendations to strengthen the defenses," said the statement. "We remind you that both the owner of the website and the hosting company of the website have a responsibility to comply with the provisions of the privacy protection laws, to inform their customers about the leaked information and the actions that will be taken to minimize the damage."
