Amazon and AWS CEOs make under-the-radar visit to Israel R&D center focused on chips
The Haifa facility, born from Annapurna Labs, plays a key role in AWS’s AI chip development.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and AWS CEO Matt Garman visited the company’s research and development center in Israel, Haifa over the past week, Calcalist has learned. The center, which is based on the acquisition of Annapurna Labs, focuses on chip development. It currently employs hundreds of people and is considered one of the company's most significant development centers. The two, who have since left Israel, met with employees and site managers there.
Annapurna Labs is an Israeli company that developed advanced chip technologies, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence. The company was acquired by Amazon in 2015 for approximately $370 million. Annapurna Labs is responsible for developing network training processors (Trainium) for AWS. These processors are used to train large, advanced artificial intelligence systems and enable AWS to offer cutting-edge AI cloud services. Thanks to Annapurna Labs' technologies, AWS users can access advanced AI services, such as training large language models, computer vision models, and more.
