“We don’t make deals like this every day” – Google executives explain thinking behind $32B Wiz deal

Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian detail the strategic timing and vision behind the tech giant's largest-ever acquisition, aiming to reshape cybersecurity in the age of AI.

Google’s $32 billion acquisition of the cybersecurity firm Wiz, the largest in the company’s history, marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing evolution of cloud computing and cybersecurity. Announced at a time when businesses are rapidly migrating to the cloud, this deal is poised to bolster Google Cloud’s position as a leader in securing multicloud environments. As Google prepares for the deal’s expected closure in 2026, CEO Sundar Pichai and Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian provided insight into the strategic importance of the move.
“We don’t make deals like this every day, so I wanted to share a little more about why, and why now,” Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, wrote in a memo to employees. This acquisition represents not only a financial commitment but a strategic imperative for the company. The acquisition of Wiz comes at a critical juncture for Google, as businesses increasingly turn to multicloud environments to manage their data. This transition, however, presents a host of complex security challenges, challenges that Google aims to solve through this acquisition.

The urgency of this acquisition is underlined by the rapid shift in how organizations approach cloud services. “Most deployments now span multiple clouds or hybrid environments, creating complex management challenges,” said Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud. By integrating Wiz’s technology, which is known for its innovative approach to cloud-native security, Google Cloud plans to tackle these emerging complexities head-on.
A key aspect of the deal is the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity. The integration of AI into cloud infrastructures has brought new opportunities but also heightened vulnerabilities. Kurian explained that the rise of AI is “accelerating the threats both to and from AI models.”
Google’s acquisition of Wiz is set to provide an advanced solution to these growing challenges. As Kurian highlighted, “Together, we believe Google Cloud and Wiz will vastly improve how security is designed, operated, and automated in the future.”
Matt Renner, Google’s president of global revenue, pointed to the rising number of breaches as one of the driving factors behind the acquisition. “We believe Wiz and Google Cloud together will accelerate organizations’ ability to improve security, lower the cost to do so, and ultimately spur the adoption of multicloud and cloud computing,” Renner wrote in his memo. “The rising number of cybersecurity breaches is a driving factor behind this acquisition.”
