Paris Centre Mayor: “We spend a lot of time discussing how to protect the Jewish community”
Ariel Weil, Mayor of Paris Centre, spoke to CTech about his district, home to one of the largest Jewish communities in Paris, during Israel’s Business Delegation to Paris led by Calcalist and Bank Hapoalim.
“It's pretty much everything you know in Paris, or almost, from the Louvre to Notre-Dame, including the Centre Pompidou,” says Ariel Weil, Mayor of Paris Centre of his district, in conversation with CTech during Israel’s Business Delegation to Paris led by Calcalist and Bank Hapoalim. Paris Centre is a relatively new district in Paris, the result of the merging of four historical districts in Paris.
“It also encompasses two interesting districts: Le Marais, which is home to the traditional Jewish presence in Paris, and the Sentier, which has been the garment district and now is turning into a district focused on tech, to the point that we've now come to call it ‘Silicon Sentier.’”
As mayor of a district that holds one of the largest Jewish communities in Paris, Weil says that they felt “shocked and scattered” after October 7th. “A lot of my work as mayor has been to make sure that we have protection around synagogues, but also all sorts of buildings including even public schools.”
He adds that his district also holds “the city hall of Paris, and the head of the Paris Police, so we spend a lot of time there discussing how to make sure that we protect the Jewish community in particular.”
