"Investing in Jerusalem is not just financial—it is an investment in the belief that there is a better future," said Moshe Lion, Mayor of Jerusalem, at the Calcalist and Bank Leumi Mind the Tech conference in New York.
"Let’s be honest: New York and Jerusalem share a special relationship, but they are not exactly the same. Both have beautiful buildings, great food, amazing museums, and world-famous coffee. But enough about Jerusalem," Lion said with a smile. "I admit, New York is also a pleasant place, but it is important to remember that Jerusalem is not just its historical past—it is also a vibrant present and a prosperous future."
Lion described the city’s growth over the past decade: "Jerusalem is a city full of hope and strength. We are building our future every single day. And the proof is not just in words but in actions. In recent years, we have doubled the number of building permits issued in the city. Each permit is a tangible promise of growth and a better life for our special communities in this extraordinary city.
"All of this is accompanied by massive investments in education, culture, and infrastructure, ensuring that every resident of Jerusalem benefits from an improved quality of life. While we move toward real progress, we also preserve the unique identity and spirit of our historic city. Jerusalem is truly one of a kind."
Alongside this growth, Lion emphasized the importance of preserving the past. "What makes Jerusalem so unique is our ability to build a new future while honoring an ancient past. This balance—preserving identity and heritage while embracing innovation—is what makes us one Jerusalem. But our story is about more than just numbers and construction. We are living in challenging times of war and conflict," he said.
"Many families in Jerusalem are experiencing profound pain and fear. They have lost loved ones, and every day, we unite in prayer for the safe return of those kidnapped and for the well-being of our sons and daughters who are fighting to protect our people."
Lion also spoke about the evacuee population, saying, "Jerusalem and its residents have welcomed with open arms those who were forced to leave their homes due to Hezbollah and Hamas rocket attacks. In these difficult moments, our community has shown its strength—by taking care of each other. Our unity is our greatest asset, and it is the key to our resilience. No matter the challenge, we move forward with clear plans, guided by smart, data-driven decisions. Every project and every step we take is done together, with a shared vision for a stronger city. Even in times of war and sorrow, our united spirit strengthens us and gives us a unique ability to overcome any challenge."
Lion stressed that Jerusalem is more than just an economic investment: "Jerusalem is a city of innovation—and a city of inspiration. International companies continue to play an important role here, highlighting the strength of our economy and the wealth of opportunities the city offers. But investing in Jerusalem is not just about financial returns. Yes, there are profits to be made, but investing in Jerusalem is also an investment in the Jewish people and in all of the city's residents."
He concluded with a message of hope: "Just as it is up to us to live and grow together in the Middle East—Jews, Muslims, and Christians—so too is investing in Jerusalem an investment in the belief that there is a better future for everyone in our region. I hope that sharing the story of Jerusalem—its progress and its challenges—can serve as an inspiration to all of you."
