Calls for gender equality in Israeli high-tech may help shrink the pay gap
Yael Greenberger, Founding Team at 8200 Woman2Woman, spoke to CTech at Tech TLV about the gender pay gap in Israeli high-tech and some of the worrying numbers surrounding promotion opportunities.
“Women represent only 36% of the tech workforce - and only 17% of women within the 36% are paid in the highest quartiles of salaries, meaning the majority of them are underpaid,” explained Yael Greenberger, Founding Team at 8200 Woman2Woman. “When we divided the seniority levels based on executive management, professional, and support, we saw that in the executive level, only 25% of that tier are women with an 11% pay gap.”
Greenberger was speaking to CTech at Tech TLV and referencing a report from last year by Compete regarding women in tech and some of the disparities in salary and work. Compete is a real-time compensation and benefit benchmarking platform, helping HR leaders, CEOs, and finance leaders to plan their budgets, and 8200 Woman2Woman is a group helping women in Israeli society by helping create value for young women. This is achieved through mentorship programs and partnerships.
According to the study, the only sector that had a 50/50 ratio is HR tech - but when the numbers are crunched, men are still twice as likely to be promoted to management as women.
“I am guessing that it's just because there's no policy. There's no legislation coming from the government saying companies need to have gender equality in terms of ratio and pay gaps,” said Greenberger. “A lot of companies have very strict policies on security and compliance and they're very data-driven. But I feel like everything that has to do with gender pay gaps is an afterthought because there's no policies. Maybe if we do see more women in executive positions, they'll implement more policies and help women in the bottom level up.”
