Israel unveils second phase of AI program with over $130 million for R&D
The initiative, running through 2027, will focus on advancing AI research, human capital development, and AI integration across government services.
The National Artificial Intelligence Program Administration announced on Tuesday the launch of the second phase of Israel’s National Artificial Intelligence Program. This phase will run until 2027 with an allocated budget of NIS 500 million (approximately $133 million). The funds will be invested in R&D infrastructure, including a National AI Research Institute that will serve as a platform for advanced research in collaboration with Israeli and international academic researchers and industry professionals. Additionally, there will be significant efforts to develop human capital within academia and the military, aiming for major breakthroughs in Israel's high-tech sector and the integration of AI into public services.
The program is part of the recommendations made by the National Digital Bureau and the Telam Forum– which includes the Israel Innovation Authority, the Council for Higher Education, the Ministry of Defense’s Directorate of Defense Research and Development, the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Finance.
The second phase focuses on several new areas, including: AI integration in the public sector and local authorities; preserving Israel’s leadership in AI research; expanding human capital in the industry; access to data and information; and encouraging transformative high-tech ventures.
“The second phase of the program is a critical stage in maintaining Israel’s position as a leading power in artificial intelligence,” said Ziv Katzir, Director of the National AI Program. “This is a broad strategic initiative that combines forces and resources from various government entities, leading industries, and academic research institutions. This collaboration will not only help Israel maintain its competitive edge in the global market but also enhance its capabilities in critical areas such as technological innovation, the development of advanced tools, and robust research infrastructures.”
